Forest Central Library

The Forest Central Library, housed within the Kerala Forest Department Headquarters at Vazhuthacaud, Thiruvananthapuram, was established in 1922 . This library serves as a valuable resource hub, catering to the general public, researchers, officials, and students. Designed to meet the needs of scholars and the public with interests in environmental science, ecology, forestry, wildlife, and related disciplines, it plays a pivotal role in promoting knowledge dissemination.

The library’s collection comprises approximately 28,000 books, including reference materials on forestry, botany, zoology, environmental science, agriculture, and management. It also houses administrative reports, research publications, census reports, and proceedings of historic legislative assemblies such as the Sree Moolam Popular Assembly, the Sree Chitra Thirunal Popular Assembly, and the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Learner’s Hub (Stack Room)

The stack room serves as the core of the library’s collection, housing the majority of its books. The books are systematically organized based on a well-defined classification system, ensuring easy access and efficient management. Literature Section

Ellora Archives  (Heritage Area)

A heritage area in a library houses a collection of rare books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and other historical artifacts. Combining a heritage area with e-learning in a library creates a powerful and engaging space. It can be used for group work and discussions.

Membership

Forest Officials: This category includes officials of the Forest Department.

Research Scholars: Individuals registered for Ph.D. programs or engaged in approved project work.

Students/ General Public: Includes college students, school students, and children. Public will be granted entry, with special permission from the officer in charge of the library.

Library automation

The Forest Central Library utilizes Koha, an advanced and user-friendly library management software, to efficiently manage its collection. The software facilitates systematic cataloging, with book records and associated details stored in a centralized database. Koha also supports powerful keyword-based searches, enabling quick and convenient access to information for users.

 

Sections of Library

Circulation, Acquisition, Technical and Reference sections are the four sections in this library

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)

RFID technology leverages radio waves to automatically identify and track library materials, enhancing efficiency and accuracy in library operations.

Kiosk

A library kiosk is a self-service station that allows users to independently access various library services and searching the catalogue.

Other services

Services such as providing photocopies of relevant pages from books or periodicals on a payment basis, café facility etc. are being provided

Anti-Theft Systems

RFID tags are integrated with security gates to deter theft.

Working hours

The library works from 10:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. on all working days.
